Endoscopic Evaluation of Peptic Ulcer Treatment with Sulfated Glycopeptide (Glide^¢ç)

Abstract
Sulfated glycoprotein (Glide ¢ç) is a semisynthetic compound obtained by sulfation of a naturally-occurring and highly purified duodenal glycoprotein, having a high molecular weight of 80,000185,000. Glide e is therefore chemically similar¢¥to the macromolecular glycoproteins of the gastric juice, whose function is related to the protection of the gastroduodenal mucosa. Glide¢ç exerts its antipeptic¢¥action by combining with pepsin, and thereby forming a less active complex and also binds itself to the mucosa protein substrate, thus increasing mucus viscosity and consequently mucosal resistance.
In order to evaluate the efficacy and side effects of Glide¢ç, 23 patients with gastric ulcer and 16 patients with duodenal ulcer proven by endoscopy were given with Glide¢ç for 8 weeks. The dosage taken was 150 mg daily, divided 3 times before meal.
Symptomatic relief was obtained after treatment. Nausea and vomiting were completely disappeared in almost all patients. Pain and heart burn were also relieved in about ninty percent of patients.
After 8 weeks treatment, ulcer healing was observed in almost all patients with acute and subacute gastric and duodenal ulcers. In one patient with big gastric ulcer and two with big duodenal ulcer, no remarkable changes in size of ulcer were found. The endoscopic examination proved the effectiveness of Glide¢ç in inducing complete healing or clear regression of ulcerative lesions in 91.3% of gastric ulcer and in 87.5% of duodenal ulcer.
No significant side effects were observed during the treatment period. In conclusion, Glide¢ç is an effective drug for the treatment of peptic ulcer, without causing significant side effects.
